Performance & Customization Go Together in AOKP Milestone 2 ROM for Android Devices

AOKP or Android Open Kang Project is a very famous and powerful Android Custom ROM coded, built and maintained by the worth members of Team Kang. The series began in November 2011 with the release of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and it stands high today with release of its latest Milestone 2 based on Jelly Bean 4.2.2. With the release of M2, AOKP now supports most of the Android smartphones and tablets, which now sums up to the list 44 devices.

Released: 21 July 2013

Today, we’re here to review and explain the major features supported by Milestone 2. Please note that these are only the major features which are observable by a user’s eye, but a huge list of other features and bug fixes are also there, merged in. The ROM took a huge leap by adding a large bunch of new devices, which are mentioned below.

The new devices added since the last Milestone 1 are:

HTC One (Intl, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile)Samsung Galaxy S4 (Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular)Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (Intl, T-Mobile, AT&T)SONY Xperia TSONY Xperia VSONY Xperia ZSONY Xperia ZLSONY Xperia Tablet Z (2 Variants)

Features explored & explained!

One of the most usable and unique feature, developed and bought by Steve Spear. AOKP Ribbons slipped in during the late nightlies, which has evolved fast enough to be regarded stable in the latest JB-MR1 Milestone 2. The aim of Ribbons is to serve its users with usability with not just tap-to-open Apps/action icons but also the toggles.

These icons/toggles are setup on the lockscreen, stacked finely spaced. You don’t need to worry about the number of icons or the space, as the arrangement is such that the icons are lined and can be swiped from right to left and vice-versa.

Elements that can be altered here are:

Vibrate on target clickShow app nameAction icon match text colorIcon size, Icon ribbon spacingColor of app label text

To use, just press the lock/power key, you’ll certainly have all the ribbons displayed on your lockscreen.

Icons/toggles here are aligned on the notification panel while it is expanded. Elements that can be altered here are same as that of the lockscreen ribbon.

Vibrate on target click: The option enables/disables vibration when an icon/toggle is pressed.Show app name: Enables/disables the app name to be shown below the icon/toggleAction icons match text color: Matches the icon and text colorIcon Size: Increase/decrease the icon/toggle sizeIcon ribbon spacing: Manage the space between icons/togglesColor of app text label: Change the color of the app name labels (If Show app name is enabled)

To use, swipe down from the top of the status bar and press on the notification icon at the top left.

Icons/toggles are placed just over the quick setting toggles. One of the best thing that happened with Jelly Bean was the introduction of a separate toggles panel and so some of us here prefer to keep the notification area clean and thus this ribbon function comes in handy. The elements that can be altered here are:

Vibrate on target click: The option enables/disables vibration when an icon/toggle is pressed.Show app name: Enables/disables the app name to be shown below the icon/toggleAction icons match text color: Matches the icon and text colorIcon Size: Increase/decrease the icon/toggle sizeIcon ribbon spacing: Manage the space between icons/togglesColor of app text label: Change the color of the app name labels (If Show app name is enabled)

To use, swipe down from the top of the status bar. Quick setting toggles shall be visible below the ribbon icons/toggles

Swipe ribbon resembles much of Ubuntu’s sidebar making it a lot easy for lazy users like me. You can just put a large number of apps in it, so no more pressing the drawer button and swiping left and right to find your favourite app. Just place it in the swipe ribbon and access easily.

The elements that can be altered here are:

Enable swipe from rightVibrate on touch of swipe areaVibrate on target clickShow app nameAction icons match text colorToggles button on bottomKeyboard swipe area hideSwipe area longswipeSwipe area longpressRibbon dismiss actionIcon sizeRibbon auto timeoutRibbon handle timeoutIcon gravityAnimation styleIcon ribbon spacingDrag handle opacityDrag handle lengthDrag handle thicknessOpacity of swipe ribbonAnimation durationColor of app label text

Quite a long list of modifications, huh? That is really awesome!

To use, gently swipe from the left, right or bottom of the screen respectively, the swipe ribbon will appear for you to scroll and select your app.

Note: Bottom swipe will only work if the on-screen buttons are permanently disabled or hidden.

So here, we’re done with the first and foremost feature offered by AOKP Milestone 2 (JB-MR1)

Privacy and security are quite essential aspects of Android. It might itself be open-sourced but yet it provides the best sense of security. AOKP adds a bunch more to this, it adds Permission Management tool. While we install an app, we do go through the permissions that it will acquire but our stock Android doesn’t help us to amend those permissions selectively.

AOKP’s Permission Management helps its user to manage permission of each and every installed app. You can allow or deny selective permissions of any of the app installed on your device.

 How to use?

Go to Settings > Permissions to execute the Permissions Management tool, make sure to switch it ON by tapping on the switch at the top right. The apps installed on your device shall be listed, tap on any app and the permissions required by it shall expand. You can now allow specific permission by ticking it or deny it by unticking.

It is very easy-to-use and handful feature offered uniquely by AOKP.

It’s a simple yet very elegant feature. What it does is, change the entire color scheme of your Android device from stock holo to a much more dark (black) pattern.

It could be easily enabled/disabled by going to Settings and switching ON/OFF the on-screen button corresponding to Dark AOKP.

mGerrit is an automated AOKP app/tool to view real-time gerrit code reviews directly on your Android device. The App is merged into AOKP ROMs, if you’re using any other ROM, you can still install it from the app box below.

To use, go to Settings > ROM Control > About AOKP > mGerrit

You can find code reviews for specific repositories too, just tap on the lined icon on the top-right of mGerrit and select your desired repo.

The Review tab contains all the code reviews made at the AOKP gerrit, irrespective of their adaption or rejection.

The Merged tab holds the list of the all the code reviews which are accepted and merged to the source code at Github.

The Abandoned tab contains the code reviews which are rejected or are considered incomplete or inappropriate of reason whatsoever

Indeed the function comes in extremely handy when you desperately need a torch around you. You now don’t need to hassle yourself by going to download a 3rd party app or use toggles.

To use, go to Settings > ROM Control > Lockscreen and switch ON GlowPad Torch. You can either enable it via LockRing (by long pressing the lockscreen ring) or via NavRing (By long pressing the NavBar ring on the lockscreen).

HDR or High-Dynamic-Range mode is a  set of method used in photography to capture a greater dynamic range between the lighter and darker areas of an image. This function is a bliss for those who use their Android devices as daily Camera to present amazing shots. This mode is supported in almost all the custom ROMs and so now AOKP also has it. It can be enabled simply in the settings of the Camera app of your device.

Please note that HDR mode is not supported on all device, some might as well not support it.

Custom Toggles come in very useful every time, you don’t need to tap here and there to reach a function to enable/disable it. Thanks to our genius developers, we have it just in our hands. There is already a long list of toggles embedded in Custom ROMs but AOKP adds a few more to the list. New toggles include Custom, Stay Awake, Reboot, Sleep etc.

To add/modify toggles, go to Settings > ROM Control > Toggles > Toggles Setup

The so-much popular app for users to manage root permissions is here embedded in this very ROM, by the worthy developer Koushik Dutta (Former of ClockworkMod and ROM Manager). We’ve always had the Superuser app on our App drawer until Koush implemented his very own superuser app, which can not just be downloaded, but can also be merged into the ROM. You can Allow/Deny root permissions to apps, enable logs, notifications and perform every other action.

To access the in-built Superuser app, go to Settings > Superuser

Well, I am myself a huge fan of AOKP since the beginning. Reminding myself of the days of my first Android (LG Optimus One P500), when ICS was out and ported and so came AOKP, it was the only ROM to which I sticked for the longest period; 3 months. Been around 2 years now, when I migrated from Desire Z to Nexus S and now finally to the Nexus 4 and I still prefer the same and the best.

Being an old user, I have felt this ROM has evolved to where it stands now, offering an elegant interface, high-performance and extreme stability to be used as a daily driver, serving you with all the essential custom features.  The release tag (Milestone) speaks for itself, so if you’re someone who seek features and stability at one place, I can assure that you won’t ever look back, but then again its my own opinion and shall vary from person-to-person.

JB-4.3

Holy yes! Out of the wildest dreams of the much awaited Nexus 4 users, Jelly Bean 4.3 is finally arriving to the coast. The sources are from Jeff Williams who shows in the Nexus 4 running Jelly Bean 4.3 (JWR66N). The rumors spent their time well before the release of JellyBean 4.3, we already covered up guide to Install Google Play Edition ROM (Android 4.3) on Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505.

The plot, our friend Jeff Willams here bought a Nexus 4 from Craigslist but while operating it, he discovered something astounding which was a new version Android, Jelly Bean 4.3. While thinking that this might just be a build.prop edit, Jeff researched a bit and concluded that it was true. As soon as this news hit the web, developers/users at Reddit, provided an helping hand to Jeff, for taking a System dump and posting it online. Initially the dump was leaked as a TWRP supported backup, which could be restored using TWRP 2.5+. Later, gmillz at the XDA-Developers forum created a flash-able zip of the same, which was pre-rooted and could be flashed using any recovery on your Nexus 4. A bit more later, he slipped a new build which was deodexed and ran an insecure kernel. While flashing the pre-rooted zip, a whole bunch reported the root not working, but a solution is posted too, read the instructions below and flash the latest Jelly Bean 4.3 leak on your Nexus 4.

Kindly visit the original thread at XDA  forums for more info and interact with other users as well.

Well, we can only come up with what is visible to a user’s eye.

These instructions are meant only and only for Nexus 4 (mako), do not attempt to try it on any other device.Read and understand the steps carefully before proceeding.DroidViews community or any of its members shall now be held responsible for any damage to your device. Use the volume keys to scroll to “Recovery mode” and choose it by pressing the power button.  Your device will boot into recovery mode now.Tap on Wipe and then on Advanced Wipe. Tick System, Data, Cache and Dalvik. Slide the button to begin the wipe process.Tap on Install and browse to the location where you dragged the file, select it and slide the button to flash.Once done, tap on Reboot and then System to reboot the device and voila! you are now on Jelly Bean 4.3.

In case, you don’t have root permissions working, download UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.41.zip and flash it using the recovery.

I have already flashed the de-odexed and insecure kernel version, enjoying it to a huge extent. Flash and share with us your experience with the new Jelly Bean 4.3. Are you satisfied with this? Well, I too expect that the official version includes a lot more than this. Hit the comments!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 GT-P3100 (3G + WiFi) Receives Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean Update

A couple of month ago Samsung released a list of its Galaxy line up that would be upgraded to Android 4.2 and 4.3. Later we got rumors that OEM will promote some of its older flagships like Galaxy S3 and Note 2 to Android 4.3 directly. It has been more than a month since the 4.2 firmware was leaked for the former device (S3) and the delay in the official release can be seen as just another indication that the above mentioned smartphones might be directly promoted to Android 4.3.

The way Samsung has started the Android 4.2.2 update to a less popular mid-range device like the Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus cannot be without a reason and we hope that the neglection of S3 and Note 2 that might be tasting sour to the users of these devices, will finally turn into some pleasant sense pretty soon. Another mid-range device from Samsung’s second generation tablet line up has now started receiving Android 4.2 update via OTA. The users of Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 GT-P3100 finally have a big reason to smile as they are now entitled to enjoy the not-so-latest version of Android before most other people with higher models.

The first Android 4.2.2 firmware for the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 GT-P3100 (3G + WiFi) is already out for the users of this device in France. Since it is an unbranded firmware, it can be installed on any Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 with model number P3100 that is not locked to a network provider. In other words, if you are able to use ant SIM card on your Tab, you can have this new firmware.

We have not been able to test this firmware, nor do we have any official changelog, so we cannot list what new features the 4.2 update for the device brings with it, but we hope that it’ll improve the performance of the device and also bring the multi-page lockscreen with widgets support. Download the firmware from below, install it and lets us know of the new changes you discover.

The news was later supported by a few actual screenshots and then we became a little serious. However, we could believe it only when we got hands on the firmware itself. Samsung Releases 2 New Galaxy S4 Video Ads Looking Down at iPhone

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Samsung, the biggest manufacturer of Android smartphones, does not see any major threat from other OEMs, like HTC, LG, Sony, Motorola, etc., that manufacture Android devices. And therefore, the only other player that the company considers a worthy rival is Apple Inc. While Samsung occupies a largest share in the smartphone market in Asian and European market, it has been facing neck to neck competition in the US and Canadian markets where major number of the so called “iSheep” crowd dwell.

The Korean smartphone giant has been trying hard to break the iPhone cult and disillusion the loyal iOS fans. For the past couple of years, especially after the launch of the Galaxy S3, Samsung has been releasing videos after videos to show its Galaxy line of devices far superior to the iPhone and iPad. In most of such video ads, Samsung has been very unabashed in its criticism of iPhone that, according to the company, is inferior to its recent flagship devices in all aspects.

Continuing its well known jab towards iPhone, Samsung has now come up with 2 new TV ads the first of which tries to establish the Galaxy S4 as the next big change for those who own an iPhone. The ad is set on an aeroplane where a Galaxy S4 user is shown happy enjoying a video on the 5? display of his phone but he is soon disturbed by a fellow passenger who own an iPhone. As their talk proceeds the man with Galaxy S4 tells him about features like Easy Mode and Smart Switching that can transfer almost everything from an iPhone to the Galaxy flagship.

The second video (below) has nothing  like tooth and claw pointing to iPhone. It is rather a simple ad that highlights the advantages of the S Translate feature of Galaxy S4. A girl takes his boyfriend to meet her parents. The boy is a little hesitant about his first impression and worried because he does not know the native tongue of his girl-friend parents. However, his Galaxy S4 come to help and with the help of translation, he is able to impress the mother by talking to her in her native language.

Anyway, watch the new videos and do not forget to share which one did you like most. Cheers!

MacRumors has obtained what it says are photos of the rear shell and logic board of the so- called "iPhone 5S," which match other images that appeared earlier in the week. The iPhone 5S is also rumored to come with a higher-resolution camera and improved light modes. The smartphone is expected to launch this fall. What do you think of the latest alleged leak of the iPhone 5S? Is it the real deal? Let us know in the comments.

Apple Scores $30M iPad Deal With L.A. Schools

Apple announced Wednesday that it has landed a major deal to sell iPad tablets to the second-largest public school district in the United States. The Los Angeles School Board of Education has approved a $30 million deal to roll out iPads to students in its district beginning this fall. Each iPad tablet will include the "Pearson Common Core System of Courses delivered via a new app," Apple said in a statement. The iPads will also be equipped with iWork, iLife, iTunes and some educational third-party apps. The school district is paying $678 for each iPad, since it includes the pre-loaded educational software, the Los Angeles Times reported. The battle for market share in the education space is competitive. A Microsoft spokesperson commented generally on tablets in schools, in a statement to Mashable on Wednesday: "Why would a school choose a device that prepares students to play games and watch videos? Why wouldn’t a school pick a device that prepares them for the workforce?" The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) said it chose the iPad for quality ratings, high scores from its student and teacher review panel, and for being its least expensive option. “The vote is another step forward in the District’s plan to equip every one of its students with a device by 2014," Jaime Aquino, district deputy superintendent of instruction, said. "When completed, the LAUSD will become the largest district in the nation to provide each of its students with the technology.” The district's purchase will join the "nearly 10 million iPads already in schools today,” according to Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing. But Apple isn't the only tech giant getting a slice of the education market pie. In the past few months, Dell has scored deals with at least six school districts across the country to distribute its Windows 8-powered Latitude 10 tablets. Also, Southern Illinois University will be giving all incoming freshman a Latitude 10 tablet. Earlier this year, Amplify — the education division of News Corp. focused on creating digital products for classrooms — showed off its 10-inch Android tablet targeted toward teachers and students. Samsung is developing its own solution for the classroom that combines tablets, e-boards and other technology, a company spokesperson told Mashable. The Samsung School solution, which incorporates Android-based Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablets, has been piloted with students in Tennessee's Memphis City Schools. What do you think about tablets in schools? Is it an effective educational tool or an unwanted distraction? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Apple testing deep LinkedIn integration for iOS 7

Further bolstering the presence of third-party social networks in iOS, Apple is testing deep LinkedIn integration for the upcoming release of iOS 7, according to code-based references found inside of the first beta of iOS 7. The code points to a single-sign-on system, similar to how iOS integrates Facebook and Twitter, for LinkedIn accounts. The references also indicate that users will be able to easily post content, such as Web links, to LinkedIn via a share-sheet or through iOS applications… According to Hamza Sood, who discovered and sent us the LinkedIn code and text strings, certain pieces of code are missing for the LinkedIn functionality to become active. Perhaps this is why LinkedIn integration is not present in the user-facing version of the first iOS 7 beta. It is currently uncertain if Apple plans to continue to develop LinkedIn integration for iOS 7, or if it will be a feature that simply vanishes after internal testing. Apple has cut social networks from iOS in the past. For example, back in 2010, Apple tested versions of iOS 4 that included Facebook integration, but the two companies did not agree to a deal until 2012 with iOS 6. Apple added Vimeo, Flickr, and Tencent Weibo integration with iOS 7. iOS 7 integration with LinkedIn would not be unprecedented. At the WWDC 2013 keynote, Apple and LinkedIn announced ties for the upcoming release of OS X Mavericks. Linkedin integration in Mavericks allows for single-sign-on app access, sharing from Safari, Notification Center-based alerts, and a presence inside of Safari for Mac’s Shared Links view. Twitter is noticeably alone in iOS 7's Shared Links panel, so adding LinkedIn integration to iOS 7 would seem logical.

Apple unveils iOS 7

Apple has unveiled iOS 7 after months of speculation. "iOS 7 is the biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the iPhone," said CEO Tim Cook, introducing iOS 7 . "It's packed with amazing new features, and a stunning new user interface." The latest version of Apple's mobile operating system represented the biggest change to the look and feel of iOS since the first iPhone launched in 2007. As anticipated, iOS 7 sports a flat-design, with the skudeomorpism of the previous design done away with. "We wanted to take an experience that people know very well and add to it," Ive explains in a video shown during the keynote event. "We see iOS 7 as defining an important new direction ... and in many ways, a beginning." The redesign of iOS has reportedly been underway for the last six months since Craig Federighi took over software development for the mobile platform. Very little of the new operating system resembles the old version of the software. Almost every part of the software has been redesigned. Among the new features are multiple pages within folders and the introduction of a today view for notification centre. Apple also showed off its new Control Centre, which offers a quicker and simpler way to control many of the most used settings. Another major change includes the introduction of a revamped multitasking interface, which is part of the Control Centre. Instead of icons, iOS 7 displays a preview of the screen. It is also smart enough to recognise when you use an app a lot during the day – such as Facebook – and devote more power and processing time to it to keep you updated. iOS also introduces a raft of small, but all the same useful features, such as a Flashlight built into the device, and AirDrop, allowing you to share files and photos without needing to send them via email or text. Other small features introduced in the latest version include FaceTime audio, per app VPN and perhaps long overdue, the ability to block people from calling you on the phone and via FaceTime, and sending texts via Message. Siri sounds more human like in iOS 7. It's also smarter and faster – very much needed with the superior processing available via Google Now. Siri also now has Twitter, Wikipedia, and most interestingly, Bing support. Apple has also beefed up security on the device, enabling enterprise single sign on support for those of you who used your iPhone in the workplace, and a revamp of find my iPhone that locks the device until you sign in with your Apple ID and password. Apple has said that the software is still under development at the moment and will be released later on in the year.

Apple iPhone 5S release date, features, price and rumours

When it comes to smartphones, the first few months of 2013 moved the proverbial goalposts.Android handsets flourished with Full HD screens, aluminium or glass unibodies and every feature under the sun. Apple’s iPhone 5 has been on the scene for a while now but its thunder is in danger of being stolen by the Android Army. The question we all want to know is what will Apple do next? With Cupertino updating the iPad 3 just months after releasing it, there are reports that an iPad Mini 2 or even an Apple TV could be on the way. What we know for sure though, is that the company will want to reclaim its smartphone crown. So, T3 has gathered together everything we know about the rumoured iPhone 5S. Apple iPhone 5S casing If some recently leaked photos from China are to be believed, the casing and outward design of the new iPhone 5 S won't be all that different to the current iPhone 5 handsets. If the pictures are genuine, they show the new iPhone 5 S will have the exact same design, dimensions and measurements as its predecessor.

The only difference between the two, according to these images, is the length of and shape of the screen cable and the parts that connect them to the chassis. This would be in line with Apple's established pattern with its iPhone handsets since the 3GS came out, which involves leaving the basic iPhone chassis largely untouched and instead concentrating on upgrading the internal parts. Up until now, Apple hasn’t strayed from the white/black colour scheme for its phones but Topeka Capital Research analyst Brian White has said he believes that along with different colours, the iPhone 5S may arrive in different sizes. This appears to be backed up by Japanese tech site Macotakara which also believes the iPhone 5S will have three extra colours added to the black or white standard. If Apple launched three models, for example with 3.5-inch, 4-inch and 5-inch screens, it would allow the company to grab both premium and budget customers. However, this could be more of a plan for the iPhone 6 as, traditionally, “S” models have kept the same outer casing as their immediate predecessors. At the bare minimum, we’d expect to see a better camera (although don’t expect ultrapixels, HTC One-style) and a faster processor. Apple iPhone 5S specs When it comes to the specs of the next iPhone, at the very least we expect Apple to use the A6X chip currently found in the latest iPad. However, the latest rumours suggest Apple could be working on an A7 chip for the forthcoming iPad 5. In years gone by, Apple has previously worked with Samsung to produce processors for it's iPhone range. But, given the recent legal tussels between the two companies, many speculate that Apple will want to distance itself from the Korean company. Some rumours have hinted at an Intel chip being included in the next iteration of the iPhone. Some purported images of iPhone 5S prototypes appear to show a change in the hardware configuration that suggests Apple is moving things around to make space for a bigger battery or extra features such as NFC. Apple famously decided to withhold NFC for the iPhone 5 and since both theSamsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy S4 have arrived toting the new connectivity, Apple may want to incorporate it this time around. Recent reports from Taiwan and tech website NFC World indicate that manufacturer Chipbond has won a major contract to build components for the iPhone 5S - including NFC. What's more, other rumours suggest that Apple will go further and include a fingerprint scanner in the iPhone 5S, adding in extra security. In terms of storage, there is the strong possibility of Apple launching a new phone with 128GB storage – similar to the latest iPad upgrade. Meanwhile Jeffries analyst Peter Misek told Business Insider that he believes the iPhone 5S will feature a “Super HD screen” along with a range of colours similar to the iPod Touch range. Considering all the top Android handsets feature Full HD displays, we reckon its unlikely Apple will launch the iPhone 5S with anything less than a 1,920 x 1,080 pixel resolution. Apple iPhone 5S camera It’s well known that one of the key battlegrounds of smartphone warfare is the specifications of the on-board camera. The Sony Xperia Z and Galaxy S4 arrived sporting 13MP cameras while HTC upset the apple cart by including a 4MP “ultrapixel” camera into its HTC One handset. Apple has consistently upped the camera specs in each of its models and its no stretch to think that the company will do the same for the iPhone 5S. According to iLounge, Cupertino isn’t planning to go down the HTC route and will instead launch the 5S with a 13MP camera – putting it in league with the Sony and Samsung handsets. Of course, hardware is only half the story and if Apple can come up with some killer in-house apps to take advantage of the camera in new ways it will give them a good start on the competition. Apple iPhone 5S pictures A few interesting pictures have leaked out onto the web regarding the iPhone 5S. One of the first to emerge was the back of an unspecified type of iPhone that was leaked to Nowhereelse.fr. There’s not much to go on here, but – as expected – the casing and design looks almost identical to the iPhone 5.

Tellingly though, the serial numbers underneath the iPhone moniker aren’t listed. While it would certainly fit with the design of the current iPhone it doesn't yet confirm whether the 5S will come in a range of colours - much like it did with the iPod Touch - or whether the company will simply stick to the black/white variants. This second image (pictured at the start of this article) apparently shows stripped-down iPhone 5S casing next to a current iPhone 5 teardown image. The snap was initially uploaded to iPhone4Parts and looks very similar to Apple’s current design – except with a few screws lost along the way. Apple iPhone 5S release date Plenty of sources have weighed in with opinions on when the iPhone 5S and the overriding good news is that it appears to be sooner rather than later. For the most part, the majority of rumours hinged on late summer as the likely date for the new phone. Business Insider recently came across reports that the new iPhone 5 will be enter production in June 2013. Manufacturers like Sharp, LG and JapanDisplay are said to be constructing displays for the new hanset and the actual device itself may arrive in "the Fall". According to iMore rumours, we may have to wait until August 2013 to see the iPhone 5S, which would make it a full year (11 months) since the company first revealed the iPhone 5. However, Apple's Worldwide Developer's conference is taking place in San Francisco from June 10-14, and we may see a few more rumours and leaks develop as a result. We'll temper that by saying that the focus of WWDC isn't the hardware. Expect more news about iOS and OS X, with maybe a snippet about the next Macbook, rather than any detailed tellings on the future of iPhone.

Phoenix from the Ashas Still, set at a recommended retail price of €75 (about £65), it promises to be perfect for those bridging the gap to a full smartphone, or for festival-goers looking for a decent backup handset that won't break the bank. Not only will it be coming in at a budget price, it'll also be presenting itself in six colours: yellow, cyan, bright red, bright green, black and white. Nokia claims that the phone will also offer 47 days of battery life on standby, and 17 hours of talk time. Not bad if you ask us.

Friends Becoming Informants: How your friends are spilling your secrets to Facebook

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
type='html'>Big companies make two kinds of announcements. There are RAH RAH RAH HOORAY FOR US announcements designed to get as much attention as possible, and there are the announcements that firms sneak out on a Friday evening when all the European journalists are drunk and the US ones are heading home.

Facebook's blog post about a major security breach falls into the latter category, because Facebook really doesn't want you to think about shadow profiles.

As Violet Blue writes on ZDNet: "The personal information leaked by the bug is information that had not been given to Facebook by the users - it is data Facebook has been compiling on its users behind closed doors, without their consent."

It turns out that if Facebook can't get information about you from you, it'll grab it from your friends instead.

What are shadow profiles?

We've known about shadow profiles for some time: in 2011, Europe vs Facebook filed a complaint against Facebook Ireland with the Irish data protection watchdog (PDF) on the grounds that Facebook was collecting "as much information of users and non-users as possible."

Facebook strenuously denied the allegations at the time, so the leak of shadow profiles must be rather embarrassing.

Here's how it works. Let's say you only put a very basic amount of information on your profile and keep details such as your main email address or your mobile phone number away from Facebook.

If any of your friends have that information and they sync their address books with Facebook, Facebook gets that contact info. If a friend from X university or Y employer searches for you, Facebook knows it's pretty likely that you went to X university or worked at Y employer.

If you aren't on Facebook but somebody's put your details into Facebook's friend finder, those details are now on Facebook.

Facebook isn't the only firm who stores address book details, but others such as Twitter delete the data after 18 months. Facebook doesn't, and it appears to store much more information - and that's none of your business, because other people provided it.

According to Facebook, giving you any control over that information would be a freedom of speech violation.

I'm not sure that's legal, because here in the EU we have pretty solid data protection legislation: it's based on "data minimisation", which is the principle that organisations shouldn't hold more data about you than is strictly necessary. "You should not hold personal data on the off-chance that it might be useful in the future," the Information Commissioner's Office says. Facebook, it seems, is doing exactly that.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but this one's a beauty: when you consider that over and above the things you consciously share Facebook can also record your GPS location, the websites you visit and any information your social network contacts have about you, it looks like the sort of thing the security services would just love.

By an interesting coincidence, Facebook's former security chief, a former FBI man who left Facebook in 2010, now works at the NSA.

HTC One may get a Windows Phone 8 reboot this year

Windows Phone 8 fans: listen up. You could be getting a new toy to play with this year in the form of the HTC One.

Launched earlier this year running Android Jelly Bean, rumours are now suggesting HTC's flagship smartphone - and the best phone in the world today - could get an OS reboot before the year is out.

According to the folks at Neowin, an inside source has revealed that the Taiwanese firm is working on a handset which will look similar to the HTC One, with a screen somewhere in the region of 4- to 5-inches.

One plus 8

The unnamed source stressed that the device in question wouldn't be identical to the One, although you should expect a metal chassis, Beats Audio technology and, obviously, Windows Phone 8.

It's thought that the handset will also borrow the UltraPixel camera technology found in the Android flagship, although specs are far from confirmed.

HTC has already dipped its toe in the Windows Phone 8 water with the HTC 8X and 8S which were launched alongside the platform last year, with the former hand-picked by Microsoft to be its signature WP8 device.

However it's been all quiet since then over at HTC, so it's not a huge surprise to learn that the manufacturer may be planning its next onslaught.

Apparently we could see the Windows Phone 8 smartphone announced this Autumn, with a release date close to Christmas - this is definitely one to watch.

iOS 7 Siri will learn your name

In iOS 7 it seems that Siri, Apple’s personal assistant, will take more time to learn how to pronounce names correctly.

Discovered in the iOS 7 beta by a developer, Siri will now ask for users’ help to pronounce names and learn the correct pronunciation.

When Siri was introduced in iOS 5 with the iPhone 4S, many users discovered that Apple’s voice recognition software struggled to pronounce many names. Users couldn’t do anything to assist Siri except change contact names to phonetic spellings.

However, one 9to5Mac reader and iOS developer discovered that Siri for iOS 7 can now learn how to say names. If it has trouble understanding a name, Siri will ask the user to teach it how to say it and undergo a learning process.

Also, iOS 7 users will be able to say “That’s not how you pronounce [insert name here]” to initiate that same learning process with Siri.

When the user informs Siri of the correct pronunciation, the iOS 7 update will allow Siri to offer back a few options as to what the correct pronunciation is. The user can then choose one of those options and Siri will save it and attempt to revert to that option from then on.

Also discovered in the iOS 7 beta for Siri are improved commands, such as asking Siri to turn on the LED flashlight.

These new iOS 7 Siri features were discovered in the first edition of the iOS 7 beta. However, Apple will be releasing iOS 7 beta 2 later today, according to American network providers.

The Apple Developer portal should also get access to the beta update as well, so expect to see a flurry of new features discovered soon.

iOS 7 was officially unveiled during the WWDC keynote this month, revealing the first major redesign overhaul for Apple’s mobile OS since the original iPhone.

Due for an autumn iOS 7 release date, the updated mobile OS will launch alongside the new OS X Mavericks for Mac devices.

BlackBerry to stop BB10 port rewards on June 30

BlackBerry will now stop paying developers to port existing apps to the new BlackBerry 10 OS, having already paid out $4 million.

The BlackBerry port-a-thon rewards will stop from June 30, BlackBerry has confirmed, winding down the campaign that started at the beginning of this year.

Around 40,000 BlackBerry apps have been ported over to fill the BB10 BlackBerry World app store since the port-a-thon campaign started in January.

Developers were offered $100 (£65) per ported app for up to 20 BB10 submissions. The reward would be given once the app was approved and appeared in the BlackBerry World store.

BlackBerry has already extended the port-a-thon campaign several times. It initially said it would spend $500,000 (£326,000) in rewards, but has now paid out around $4 million (£2.6 million) to developers to support its fledging OS.

Next, BlackBerry is said to be focusing on making BB10 gaming apps more successful.

The first BB10 port-a-thon back in January saw more than 15,000 BlackBerry 10 apps submitted for the then unreleased platform within the first two days.

Not only were existing BlackBerry apps transformed for BB10, but developers also made Android apps and games compatible with the latest BlackBerry OS.

Speaking during his BlackBerry Live keynote speech, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins confirmed BB10 now supports 120,000 apps. Of course, this figure is still miles behind rival platforms, Apple and Android, but seeing as it launched with just 70,000 in January, the OS is definitely growing.

“One third of application developers are now targeting BlackBerry 10 as their primary platform,” said Heins after the announcement. “Thanks to all our developer for doing this with and for us.”

BlackBerry has already launched two BB10 handsets, the full touchscreen BlackBerry Z10 and physical QWERTY keyboard BlackBerry Q10. The Canadian smartphone manufacturer will also be releasing the BlackBerry Q5 early next month.

Apple iOS 7 second Beta launched, brings iPad support

Apple has delivered the first taste of how the new-look iOS will look on its larger mobile devices by seeding the second beta of iOS 7 to developers. Two weeks after the initial beta became available to the privileged few, Apple has added iPad support with the new update. Previously iOS 7 was only available to download for iPhone and iPod touch. According to 9to5Mac's hands-on with iOS 7 on iPad, the new UI actually suits the larger screen as well, if not better than it does Apple's 4-inch devices. However, the blog said differences are few and far between, with many of the apps like Notification Center, Siri and Control Center feeling "less iPad optimised" and more like "blown up versions of the iPhone app." There are a some nuances though. The Music app is different for iPhone and iPad (as it was in iOS 6), while there's a new version of the iPad-specific Photo Booth app with the new flatter interface. However, it's important to remember that this is the tablet's first experience of iOS 7 and there will be many more beta builds before the final version of the software is released later this year. It's entirely possible that things will change considerably between now and then and bring more optimised apps to suit the slate. Aside from iPad optimisation there's little other improvements or new features to speak of aside from the usual bug fixes.

15 Hidden iOS 7 Features Apple Didn't Tell You About

Apple recently unveiled its latest mobile operating system for iPhones and iPads called iOS 7.

The operating system has a brand new look and several new features, but Apple didn't have time to go over all the changes during its big presentation last week.

So what didn't Apple tell us about iOS 7? We've been using the beta version of the software for a few days now and uncovered a few lesser-known features.

Here's what you can look forward to.

1. Apple is experimenting with an easier way to move back a screen in apps. There have been signs that you'll be able to use a swiping gesture instead of tapping a "back" button.

2. When you set the timer in the clock app, the countdown appears on your lock screen. It'll also show how much time you have left on your alarm if you hit the snooze.

3. The App Store now has a wish list. This is perfect for situations when you don't want to purchase an app right away but want to remember it.

4. The iCloud keychain was mentioned briefly during Apple's keynote. The feature stores and encrypts your passwords and credit card information. iCloud keychains then syncs this data across all your devices. You'll never forget a password again.

5. Passbook, which stores virtual coupons and tickets, has been improved drastically. Now users can add cards to the app by scanning a QR code.

6. When shooting a video, you can now pinch to zoom.

7. Apple has added more accessibility features, making it easier to navigate the software. Now you can make text easier to read.

8. Wallpapers are now dynamic. This means you can set a panoramic photo as a background and move the device to see the whole picture.

9. iOS 7's icons subtly move too. If the motion is too much, you can turn it off in the settings menu.

10. When dialing a number, users can see their background as they press numbers.

11. Text messages now pull in links to phone numbers and calendar events. For example, if you text someone to "meet me at a bar tomorrow," the date will be underlined and linked so you can add it to your calendar.

12. iOS 7 uses a new type of multitasking, which allows apps to run in the background. You can control which apps you want to run in the background in the settings menu.

13. There are rumors that Apple will allow users to hide its built-in apps in case you don't want them cluttering up your home screen.

14. There are also rumors that users will be able to create a folder within a folder.

15. Some new gestures include the ability to pinch closed a folder and support for corner-swiping.
