Apple iPhone 5S release date, features, price and rumours
When it comes to smartphones, the first few months of 2013 moved the proverbial goalposts.Android handsets flourished with Full HD screens, aluminium or glass unibodies and every feature under the sun. Apple’s iPhone 5 has been on the scene for a while now but its thunder is in danger of being stolen by the Android Army. The question we all want to know is what will Apple do next? With Cupertino updating the iPad 3 just months after releasing it, there are reports that an iPad Mini 2 or even an Apple TV could be on the way. What we know for sure though, is that the company will want to reclaim its smartphone crown. So, T3 has gathered together everything we know about the rumoured iPhone 5S. Apple iPhone 5S casing If some recently leaked photos from China are to be believed, the casing and outward design of the new iPhone 5 S won't be all that different to the current iPhone 5 handsets. If the pictures are genuine, they show the new iPhone 5 S will have the exact same design, dimensions and measurements as its predecessor.
The only difference between the two, according to these images, is the length of and shape of the screen cable and the parts that connect them to the chassis. This would be in line with Apple's established pattern with its iPhone handsets since the 3GS came out, which involves leaving the basic iPhone chassis largely untouched and instead concentrating on upgrading the internal parts. Up until now, Apple hasn’t strayed from the white/black colour scheme for its phones but Topeka Capital Research analyst Brian White has said he believes that along with different colours, the iPhone 5S may arrive in different sizes. This appears to be backed up by Japanese tech site Macotakara which also believes the iPhone 5S will have three extra colours added to the black or white standard. If Apple launched three models, for example with 3.5-inch, 4-inch and 5-inch screens, it would allow the company to grab both premium and budget customers. However, this could be more of a plan for the iPhone 6 as, traditionally, “S” models have kept the same outer casing as their immediate predecessors. At the bare minimum, we’d expect to see a better camera (although don’t expect ultrapixels, HTC One-style) and a faster processor. Apple iPhone 5S specs When it comes to the specs of the next iPhone, at the very least we expect Apple to use the A6X chip currently found in the latest iPad. However, the latest rumours suggest Apple could be working on an A7 chip for the forthcoming iPad 5. In years gone by, Apple has previously worked with Samsung to produce processors for it's iPhone range. But, given the recent legal tussels between the two companies, many speculate that Apple will want to distance itself from the Korean company. Some rumours have hinted at an Intel chip being included in the next iteration of the iPhone. Some purported images of iPhone 5S prototypes appear to show a change in the hardware configuration that suggests Apple is moving things around to make space for a bigger battery or extra features such as NFC. Apple famously decided to withhold NFC for the iPhone 5 and since both theSamsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy S4 have arrived toting the new connectivity, Apple may want to incorporate it this time around. Recent reports from Taiwan and tech website NFC World indicate that manufacturer Chipbond has won a major contract to build components for the iPhone 5S - including NFC. What's more, other rumours suggest that Apple will go further and include a fingerprint scanner in the iPhone 5S, adding in extra security. In terms of storage, there is the strong possibility of Apple launching a new phone with 128GB storage – similar to the latest iPad upgrade. Meanwhile Jeffries analyst Peter Misek told Business Insider that he believes the iPhone 5S will feature a “Super HD screen” along with a range of colours similar to the iPod Touch range. Considering all the top Android handsets feature Full HD displays, we reckon its unlikely Apple will launch the iPhone 5S with anything less than a 1,920 x 1,080 pixel resolution. Apple iPhone 5S camera It’s well known that one of the key battlegrounds of smartphone warfare is the specifications of the on-board camera. The Sony Xperia Z and Galaxy S4 arrived sporting 13MP cameras while HTC upset the apple cart by including a 4MP “ultrapixel” camera into its HTC One handset. Apple has consistently upped the camera specs in each of its models and its no stretch to think that the company will do the same for the iPhone 5S. According to iLounge, Cupertino isn’t planning to go down the HTC route and will instead launch the 5S with a 13MP camera – putting it in league with the Sony and Samsung handsets. Of course, hardware is only half the story and if Apple can come up with some killer in-house apps to take advantage of the camera in new ways it will give them a good start on the competition. Apple iPhone 5S pictures A few interesting pictures have leaked out onto the web regarding the iPhone 5S. One of the first to emerge was the back of an unspecified type of iPhone that was leaked to Nowhereelse.fr. There’s not much to go on here, but – as expected – the casing and design looks almost identical to the iPhone 5.
Tellingly though, the serial numbers underneath the iPhone moniker aren’t listed. While it would certainly fit with the design of the current iPhone it doesn't yet confirm whether the 5S will come in a range of colours - much like it did with the iPod Touch - or whether the company will simply stick to the black/white variants. This second image (pictured at the start of this article) apparently shows stripped-down iPhone 5S casing next to a current iPhone 5 teardown image. The snap was initially uploaded to iPhone4Parts and looks very similar to Apple’s current design – except with a few screws lost along the way. Apple iPhone 5S release date Plenty of sources have weighed in with opinions on when the iPhone 5S and the overriding good news is that it appears to be sooner rather than later. For the most part, the majority of rumours hinged on late summer as the likely date for the new phone. Business Insider recently came across reports that the new iPhone 5 will be enter production in June 2013. Manufacturers like Sharp, LG and JapanDisplay are said to be constructing displays for the new hanset and the actual device itself may arrive in "the Fall". According to iMore rumours, we may have to wait until August 2013 to see the iPhone 5S, which would make it a full year (11 months) since the company first revealed the iPhone 5. However, Apple's Worldwide Developer's conference is taking place in San Francisco from June 10-14, and we may see a few more rumours and leaks develop as a result. We'll temper that by saying that the focus of WWDC isn't the hardware. Expect more news about iOS and OS X, with maybe a snippet about the next Macbook, rather than any detailed tellings on the future of iPhone.
Skype iOS app to enhance the unlimited free video posts
The update comes a little more than a week after Skype announced that it would make video messages absolutely free on all platforms.
The blog post, the company said at the time: "the Video messaging is now available for all Skype users. Send and receive video messages to as many as you want-completely free of charge. You can receive and watch your Video messages to the Forum, or on Skype. "
Feature allows users to send video messages for three minutes, the length of the Skype for Windows and Mac apps, smartphones and tablets.
It has proved to be popular for those who want to send personalized video messages quickly and easily, while it is also a good option, if the users are not able to contact when trying to do a live audio and video call.
As well as some general fixes and improvements to the stability of the application to improve the video and call and bring in more reliable photo sharing.
Earlier this month the company had rolled out a video message feature, first appeared in iOS, Android and Mac users in February, BlackBerry, Windows 8 and Windows desktop users.
Strange, because Microsoft owns a company, the property is still hitting the Windows Phone.
Nokia Asha 501 to illuminate UK in next few weeks
Don't get too excited about the specs though - with only 2G connectivity on offer, the 501 is the budget buyer's choice. It also packs a 2-inch QVGA display, 3.2MP camera, along with a 4GB memory card in the box.
The phone runs on Nokia's overhauled Asha software, which brings in the big Windows Phone icons and simple swiping. Meanwhile there are two main screens, the 'Home' and the 'Fastlane'. The former has the traditional grid of apps while the latter is a feed of messages and updates, as well as recently-used applications. Phoenix from the Ashas Still, set at a recommended retail price of €75 (about £65), it promises to be perfect for those bridging the gap to a full smartphone, or for festival-goers looking for a decent backup handset that won't break the bank. Not only will it be coming in at a budget price, it'll also be presenting itself in six colours: yellow, cyan, bright red, bright green, black and white. Nokia claims that the phone will also offer 47 days of battery life on standby, and 17 hours of talk time. Not bad if you ask us.
Motorola X Phone launch teased the leaked ad campaign?
Labeled as "the pitch of the Motorola job", pictures of the farewell to the Moto-ad campaign was posted on Behance.net designer BA Bakken suggests that Motorola will be re-invigorated, the transitional period for the company.
"Motorola, which returns not once, reminding you of the company. But we have to do ", reads one of the images. "So until we are ready, we are going away. No new ads or tweets. Site updates Quite slowly, until we start the next chapter. Until we meet again, goodbye Moto. "
A variety of images of the Motorola adds to early retirement is the date of 1 August, while in others there is a timer that shows the 37 days and 13 hours. These photos were sent to 23. June, which means that they're 38 days on August 1, which support the idea that this is not just a placeholder text.
The previous Motorola X phone makes and a specs leaks have suggested, and in August, the release date for the upcoming "hero" of the Smartphone, which also supports the advertising campaign.
Motorola said the X-Phone will launch this summer.
The second phase of the advertising campaign was also posted online, the same designer of the tagged Behance "rebrand".
Is pictured in a Smartphone that looks very similar to the Motorola RAZR i emblazoned with the words, "Hello again". The color spectrum is much more vibrant than the first set of ads and could be the tip of the upcoming Motorola X phone color choices.
The handset would reportedly pack 1.7 GHz dual-core processor, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB of internal storage and a 720 p HD display, the size is unknown.
Friends Becoming Informants: How your friends are spilling your secrets to Facebook
AppId is over the quota
type='html'>Big companies make two kinds of announcements. There are RAH RAH RAH HOORAY FOR US announcements designed to get as much attention as possible, and there are the announcements that firms sneak out on a Friday evening when all the European journalists are drunk and the US ones are heading home.
Facebook's blog post about a major security breach falls into the latter category, because Facebook really doesn't want you to think about shadow profiles.
As Violet Blue writes on ZDNet: "The personal information leaked by the bug is information that had not been given to Facebook by the users - it is data Facebook has been compiling on its users behind closed doors, without their consent."
It turns out that if Facebook can't get information about you from you, it'll grab it from your friends instead.
What are shadow profiles?
We've known about shadow profiles for some time: in 2011, Europe vs Facebook filed a complaint against Facebook Ireland with the Irish data protection watchdog (PDF) on the grounds that Facebook was collecting "as much information of users and non-users as possible."
Facebook strenuously denied the allegations at the time, so the leak of shadow profiles must be rather embarrassing.
Here's how it works. Let's say you only put a very basic amount of information on your profile and keep details such as your main email address or your mobile phone number away from Facebook.
If any of your friends have that information and they sync their address books with Facebook, Facebook gets that contact info. If a friend from X university or Y employer searches for you, Facebook knows it's pretty likely that you went to X university or worked at Y employer.
If you aren't on Facebook but somebody's put your details into Facebook's friend finder, those details are now on Facebook.
Facebook isn't the only firm who stores address book details, but others such as Twitter delete the data after 18 months. Facebook doesn't, and it appears to store much more information - and that's none of your business, because other people provided it.
According to Facebook, giving you any control over that information would be a freedom of speech violation.
I'm not sure that's legal, because here in the EU we have pretty solid data protection legislation: it's based on "data minimisation", which is the principle that organisations shouldn't hold more data about you than is strictly necessary. "You should not hold personal data on the off-chance that it might be useful in the future," the Information Commissioner's Office says. Facebook, it seems, is doing exactly that.
I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but this one's a beauty: when you consider that over and above the things you consciously share Facebook can also record your GPS location, the websites you visit and any information your social network contacts have about you, it looks like the sort of thing the security services would just love.
By an interesting coincidence, Facebook's former security chief, a former FBI man who left Facebook in 2010, now works at the NSA.
HTC One may get a Windows Phone 8 reboot this year
Launched earlier this year running Android Jelly Bean, rumours are now suggesting HTC's flagship smartphone - and the best phone in the world today - could get an OS reboot before the year is out.
According to the folks at Neowin, an inside source has revealed that the Taiwanese firm is working on a handset which will look similar to the HTC One, with a screen somewhere in the region of 4- to 5-inches.
One plus 8
The unnamed source stressed that the device in question wouldn't be identical to the One, although you should expect a metal chassis, Beats Audio technology and, obviously, Windows Phone 8.
It's thought that the handset will also borrow the UltraPixel camera technology found in the Android flagship, although specs are far from confirmed.
HTC has already dipped its toe in the Windows Phone 8 water with the HTC 8X and 8S which were launched alongside the platform last year, with the former hand-picked by Microsoft to be its signature WP8 device.
However it's been all quiet since then over at HTC, so it's not a huge surprise to learn that the manufacturer may be planning its next onslaught.
Apparently we could see the Windows Phone 8 smartphone announced this Autumn, with a release date close to Christmas - this is definitely one to watch.
Samsung Galaxy Mega is also in purple
Even if there is no picture, but the plum purple option would be a vibrant addition to the Samsung Galaxy Mega Mega 5.8 and 6.3.
The flagship of the Samsung Galaxy S4 released a total of six colors, so it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Samsung will start rolling out the other colors of its smartphone devices.

iOS 7 Siri will learn your name
Discovered in the iOS 7 beta by a developer, Siri will now ask for users’ help to pronounce names and learn the correct pronunciation.
When Siri was introduced in iOS 5 with the iPhone 4S, many users discovered that Apple’s voice recognition software struggled to pronounce many names. Users couldn’t do anything to assist Siri except change contact names to phonetic spellings.
However, one 9to5Mac reader and iOS developer discovered that Siri for iOS 7 can now learn how to say names. If it has trouble understanding a name, Siri will ask the user to teach it how to say it and undergo a learning process.
Also, iOS 7 users will be able to say “That’s not how you pronounce [insert name here]” to initiate that same learning process with Siri.
When the user informs Siri of the correct pronunciation, the iOS 7 update will allow Siri to offer back a few options as to what the correct pronunciation is. The user can then choose one of those options and Siri will save it and attempt to revert to that option from then on.
Also discovered in the iOS 7 beta for Siri are improved commands, such as asking Siri to turn on the LED flashlight.
These new iOS 7 Siri features were discovered in the first edition of the iOS 7 beta. However, Apple will be releasing iOS 7 beta 2 later today, according to American network providers.
The Apple Developer portal should also get access to the beta update as well, so expect to see a flurry of new features discovered soon.
iOS 7 was officially unveiled during the WWDC keynote this month, revealing the first major redesign overhaul for Apple’s mobile OS since the original iPhone.
Due for an autumn iOS 7 release date, the updated mobile OS will launch alongside the new OS X Mavericks for Mac devices.
BlackBerry to stop BB10 port rewards on June 30
The BlackBerry port-a-thon rewards will stop from June 30, BlackBerry has confirmed, winding down the campaign that started at the beginning of this year.
Around 40,000 BlackBerry apps have been ported over to fill the BB10 BlackBerry World app store since the port-a-thon campaign started in January.
Developers were offered $100 (£65) per ported app for up to 20 BB10 submissions. The reward would be given once the app was approved and appeared in the BlackBerry World store.
BlackBerry has already extended the port-a-thon campaign several times. It initially said it would spend $500,000 (£326,000) in rewards, but has now paid out around $4 million (£2.6 million) to developers to support its fledging OS.
Next, BlackBerry is said to be focusing on making BB10 gaming apps more successful.
The first BB10 port-a-thon back in January saw more than 15,000 BlackBerry 10 apps submitted for the then unreleased platform within the first two days.
Not only were existing BlackBerry apps transformed for BB10, but developers also made Android apps and games compatible with the latest BlackBerry OS.
Speaking during his BlackBerry Live keynote speech, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins confirmed BB10 now supports 120,000 apps. Of course, this figure is still miles behind rival platforms, Apple and Android, but seeing as it launched with just 70,000 in January, the OS is definitely growing.
“One third of application developers are now targeting BlackBerry 10 as their primary platform,” said Heins after the announcement. “Thanks to all our developer for doing this with and for us.”
BlackBerry has already launched two BB10 handsets, the full touchscreen BlackBerry Z10 and physical QWERTY keyboard BlackBerry Q10. The Canadian smartphone manufacturer will also be releasing the BlackBerry Q5 early next month.

Samsung Galaxy Young review
What is the Samsung Galaxy Young?
The Samsung Galaxy Young is a compact 3.27-inch Android phone that, at a smidge less than £90 on a SIM-free basis, is a true budget phone. It's the smaller sibling to the Samsung Galaxy Fame and the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2. As its name suggests, it is aimed at the pre-teen, first-time smartphone user who has few demands that will trouble the 1GHz single-core processor. The Young is a very basic phone with a 3-megapixel camera and just 4GB of internal storage.Having risen to dominate the high-end smartphone sector with the Samsung Galaxy S4, the question now is can Samsung hit similar heights on a budget front? Read on to find out.
Samsung Galaxy Young - Design
The Samsung Galaxy Young has a design similar to a scaled down Samsung Galaxy S3. It is a squat, bulbous little phone that felt dwarfed by our hand compared to huge smartphones that are so common now.
While its 3.27-inch size is small by modern standards, at 12.5mm thick the Young is a bit of a chunker. Weighing in at 112g, it weighs the same as the far superior iPhone 5 but confines this heft to a much smaller space, giving the impression of being considerably heavier than the Apple offering as a result.
The Young’s slightly curved rear makes it fit marginally more comfortably within the hand than the boxy form of the similarly priced LG Optimus L3, with its rounded edges easier and less invasive to hold. Pleasingly, the Samsung Galaxy Young’s plastic build does not make the phone feel particularly fragile either.
Although the considerable thickness can make the handset feel a little clunky and dense, it also ensures the Young does not bend or flex when put under considerable amounts of pressure. This cannot be said about all budget phones. Still, we wouldn’t fancy its chances against a couple of drops to the pavement.
The design of the Samsung Galaxy Young is by no means the most stylish to on a smartphone, but neither is it particularly abrasive on the eye. Its faux metal band, which is actually silver plastic and encompasses the outer edge of the phone, brings an air of elegance and higher-end appeal to the phone.
The Samsung Galaxy Young is available in white, blue, grey and ‘wine red’ colour schemes, which gives it a bit more character than certain budget phones, including the bland, lifeless black slab that is the Huawei Ascend G510.
Samsung Galaxy Young - Screen Quality
The Samsung Galaxy Young’s screen is far from the handset’s standout feature. Indeed, it’s the same disappointing 480 x 320 pixel LCD screen found on the Samsung Galaxy Fame. Unlike most smartphone screens, which can display 16.7million colours or more, the Young’s screen is limited to just 256,000 colours. That means photos and videos look dull in comparison to even mid-range smartphones – even web pages don’t look good.
The Young’s screen has a slightly improved sharpness (176 pixels-per-inch to 165) than the Fame, thanks to being marginally smaller (3.27-inches to 3.5-inches). But this minor improvement is barely noticeable to the naked eye and, like its more expensive sibling, the Young provides far from defined and sharp content. App icons and text have blocky, pixelated edges and word heavy web pages have a smeared effect.
For the price, however, the Samsung Galaxy Young’s screen is passable. Where the same screen on the £150 Samsung Galaxy Fame felt like a pitiful offering, on a £90 phone it is just about acceptable. It is a fairly middling offering for the budget smartphone market – it’s a small improvement over the LG Optimus L3’s display, but it’s considerably weaker than the 800 x 480 pixel WVGA screen found on the £90 Vodafone Smart 3.
Brightness is a little lacking and viewing angles are pretty poor but, for the large part, responsiveness to touch is satisfactory. The Young’s screen does, however, feature one touch-based irritation. Its antireflective coating makes the screen feel almost greasy. This is a fairly common issue with budget phones and a sign of cheaper components. Not a total deal breaker, it simply creates a sluggish swipe motion on occasion.
Samsung Galaxy Young - Software
The Samsung Galaxy Young runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which is overlaid with the ever-present TouchWiz UI, Samsung’s trademark skin that’s included on every Galaxy phone from the lowly Ace to the premium Galaxy S4. It’s a simple and intuitive interface that allows up to seven homescreens to be adorned with all manner of widgets and app shortcuts.
Both Samsung’s base browser and Google’s Chrome app are present, but neither offers a particularly speedy browsing experience - whether accessing the web via 3G or using Wi-Fi pages load unexpectedly slowly. It’s a reminder, were one needed, that this is budget phone in every respect – it simply lacks the processing power to render web pages quickly.
The Young’s software keyboard is cramped and hard to type on, too. The Touchwiz keyboard that works so well on the larger Samsung Galaxy S4 is ill-suited to the smaller, 3.27-inch Samsung Galaxy Young screen. This means each key has an extremely small contact zone, making accidental presses and errors an all too frequent, and unavoidable, occurrence.
What’s more, the Young’s predictive text options leave a lot to be desired. Accidental presses on the cramped keyboard are not amended, leaving you with a considerable amount of editing to do before sending a text or email. You can activate Swype-style input (dragging your finger from one letter to the next to spell out a word) to help fight against this, but it’s not to everyone’s taste.
Samsung Galaxy Young - Performance
The Samsung Galaxy Young shows its entry-level nature with a 1GHz single-core processor and 768MB of RAM, struggling at times to create a smooth flow between applications.
The Young has the same CPU as its big brother and, strangely, more memory than the pricier Samsung Galaxy Fame (512MB). More memory should help provide faster app load times and multitasking strengths but, in practice, this is not the case. A noticeable amount of lag follows you wherever you go on the Young. From a slight pause before unlocking the handset to the stutter that precedes ever app launch, it’s far from prompt or speedy.
Forget about heavy-duty gaming, too. The likes of Real Racing 3 are firmly off-limits, and not just because they take up the handset’s full 4GB of internal storage, less than 1.4GB of which is user available. Fortunately, this storage issue can be overcome via microSD, but the phone’s sluggishness and limited gaming cannot.
The Young’s inbuilt speaker is average for such a moderately priced handset. Volume is quieter than we would have like, as it needs to be turned near to the top of its range in order to be of an amenable level. The trouble, though, is that moving to these higher volumes introduces significant distortion and rattle.
No boxed headphones keeps the costs low but highlights the Young’s lack of multimedia credentials.
Samsung Galaxy Young - Camera
The Samsung Galaxy Young camera is a true budget offering. A 3-megapixel stills camera with a fixed focus and no flash, the snapper is an acceptable but less than impressive addition. There is no forward-facing camera either, so those video calls that the youths do love so much are out of the question...
For a budget smartphone it is a moderate performer. The Young’s camera is on par with the 3-megapixel LG Optimus L3, and even holds its own against the 5-megapixel snapper on the Vodafone Smart 3, although the lack of a flash does restrict it. Lighting is not the camera's forte either; anything but bright sunlight means lifeless, murky photos. It’s slow to adjust to changing light conditions, too.
Video can be captured at VGA (640 x 480) quality but this is better avoided. Although the Young keeps motion blur to a respectable level, there is no escaping the low quality results that, at just 24 frames-per-second, are still quite jerky.
Like the phone's screen, colour and detail is where the Young's camera trips up. Colours themselves are ok, but detail in low contrast areas is poor, with lots of blocky ‘noise’. Photos are better viewed on a PC than the phone's screen too, to avoid further dilution of detail.
The lack of a flash and poor low contrast performance means this isn’t a camera for indoor shots, which is a shame considering its target market. The shutter speed is acceptable and there are a few photo camera effects on offer (black & white, sepia and negative) to play with, but the low-resolution and poor detail make this a forgettable camera phone.
Samsung Galaxy Young - Call Quality
Call quality on the Samsung Galaxy Young is what you would expect. Calls are mostly clear, although clarity can be a little off with a small amount of distortion creeping in from time to time. Like the built-in speaker, the earpiece could be louder, while calls taken on the speaker phone sound hollow with an unwanted element of echo and tininess to conversations.
Samsung Galaxy Young - Battery Life and Connectivity
The Samsung Galaxy Young’s battery life is as middle of the road as the rest of the phone. It clears the one day hump with ease, and steady use of the Young will see you push into a second day but little further.
With a 1,300mAh Lithium-Ion battery under the plastic hood, the claimed six and a half hour talk time rings true. The Young's small, slightly dull screen is a benefit here, requiring less juice to power it along. With not quite the staying power of the Galaxy Fame, the Young is by no means overshadowed by its closest rivals.
Connectivity options on the Samsung Galaxy Young are limited to the barebones basics. No NFC, no HDMI, no 4G, but that is not an issue. What the Young has all works well and with little fuss.
Wi-Fi signals are strong and easy to set up, more than can be said about some more expensive phones.
Should I buy the Samsung Galaxy Young?
With the Young, Samsung is hoping its brand appeal will help it squeeze a few extra quid out of parents' pockets.
There are phones at the same price with improved specs and features but a less tantalising name stamped across the back. This might not matter to some but in the image conscious pre-teen market the phone is targeting, it could be a deal breaker and one which Samsung is willing to push its luck on.
The Samsung Galaxy Young, as value for money, is the clear choice over the Fame. It's hard to understand why the Fame exists.
Compared with comparatively priced rivals, it falls somewhere in the middle. It's better than the LG Optimus L3, but not quite as pleasing or impressive as the Vodafone Smart 3 or even some Huawei handsets. It's just an adequate, but far from ground-breaking, entrant to the sub £100 scene.
Verdict
If your needs are basic, you could do worse than the Samsung Galaxy Young. It is £50 cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Fame with a performance and spec that better matches its price tag. The Young might not set the smartphone world alight, but for a penny shy of £90 you will feel like you are getting good value.

iPad mini takes gold in iOS sales, accounts for 60% in early 2013
The figures come from Gartner's regular look at the global devices market, totting up sales of smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs.
We're still going crazy for tablets, the figures suggest, but buyers' focus is shifting from premium slates to cheaper options, with Garner saying that basic tablets like the iPad mini and Google Nexus 7 are expected to shoot up in popularity even more quickly than expected.
Life cycles of the rich and famous
But the analyst house also sees demand for both tablets and smartphones slipping as people opt for devices that will last longer and need upgrading less frequently.
Things are still looking fairly gloomy for PC and laptop sales, which have slipped further, although 'Ultramobiles' like Ultrabooks, hybrid devices, Windows 8 tablets and Chromebooks, have shot up in popularity and are expected to continue to grow.
It's good news, too, for Android, which retains its crown as most popular operating system across PCs, tablets, smartphones and notebooks; in second place comes Windows, while Apple's Mac OS and iOS software take third.
Limited Edition Vertu Ti Colors goes on sale in red and blue
Vertu has announced a new special edition of the already special Vertu Ti handset. Called the Vertu Ti Color (surely they could have afforded to come up with a more creative name), the limited edition handset will be available in two colors, Sunset Red and Midnight Blue. Only 1000 units of this handset will be made.
One of the things that sets Vertu devices apart from other phones is the choice of material gone into making them (and the other being the resultant price tag). The Vertu Ti Colors follows that tradition by having a grade 5 titanium body, which other than making it five times stronger than other smartphones also makes it very light. Complementing the metal is calf leather in either of the two colors.
In terms of hardware specifications, the Vertu Ti Color has a 3.7-inch display with sapphire crystal cover that is said to be the largest ever engineered. Sapphire crystal is known to be extremely hard and weaker only to diamond.
On the inside is a 1.7GHz processor of unknown make and model, 8 megapixel rear camera with auto-focus and dual LED flash, 1.3 megapixel front camera, 64GB storage memory, NFC and a rather outdated Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Also part of the package is Vertu's famous Concierge service.
The Vertu Ti Colors is priced at HK$90,000 (or US$11,600) and is on sale right now.
Alleged LG Optimus G2 screenshots show onscreen keys
The images in question show that the company hasn't altered the look of the Optimus UI too much, but has rather given it a few refreshing touches here and there. What the screenshots do reveal though, is the resolution of the Optimus G2. The smartphone's 5" screen is now confirmed to have full HD resolution.
Notice the onscreen software buttons, suggesting that LG has chosen to leave out the physical buttons for its upcoming flagship. This would also make it easier for LG to make the rumored Nexus 5.
Purported photo of the LG Opitmus G2 has already given us a glimpse of how the smartphone would look.
Qualcomm and LG have also confirmed the smartphone will be powered by the Snapdragon 800 chipset.
HP Slate 21 AIO unveiled with Tegra 4 processor
The HP Slate 21 AIO was unveiled at a HP event in Beijing and combines an Android tablet with a desktop PC and is equipped with the Nvidia Tegra 4 processor.
“Honestly, that larger screen allows for a better shared experience,” said Eric Wiggins of Hewlett-Packard. “This could replace one or two mobile devices in your home that could be used as a shared device for the house.”

The HP Slate 21 AIO also packs Wireless Direct wireless printing technology.
HP has yet to release a full specs list for the HP Slate 21 but it will be interesting to see if such a large-screen Android desktop AIO is a viable option when it comes to market.

Samsung Ativ Tab 3 - First Impressions
Yes, indeed: that's what Samsung has just unleashed on the unsuspecting public with the Ativ Tab 3, most thinking they were safe from the deluge of tablets that the South Korean firm was throwing onto the market.
It's not fair to disparage the new Windows 8 tablet just because it looks so similar to other devices from the mothership - it's actually a decent device in its own right.
For a start, it's the thinnest Windows 8 tablet in the world and has 2GB of RAM to power things along.
It's not running Windows RT either, so you'll have a full whack of OS power to play with when it comes to programs to use - the Windows 8 interface works effectively on the 10.1-inch screen and, while the 1366 x 768 resolution looks a little grainy, it's acceptable because Samsung tells us is going to be skewed more towards the 'affordable' end of the market.
The 550g weight is also another real selling point, as while its Ativ Q sibling is a rather chunky unit that may cause your arm to fall off on the train, this comes in with a much more sprightly mass (yes, we know mass isn't technically the right word there).
The battery life is another of the Ativ Tab 3's selling points, tagged to last for 10 hours, which is good enough for 'most' long haul flights, according to Samsung's official press materials. It's always good when these things are absolute, isn't it? Lest a slew of returns occur at Hong Kong's airport, with disgruntled Ativ Tab 3 owners annoyed at the lack of power they encountered whilst watching Van Wilder: Party Liaison for the fifth time on the flight.
The ports are much less generous than on the Ativ Q or the other Windows 8 laptops, with only a microUSB, microHDMI and microSD slot showing that you can connect to other devices. In fact, it's actually the same as the Samsung Galaxy S4 - so if you own one of those, you'll be set. Actually, no, that's not true as the HDMI and USB ports are combined on the smartphone. Sorry about that.
The S Pen makes a lot of sense on the Ativ Tab 3 as the 1024 levels of sensitivity can be applied to a wide number of applications throughout the device, which makes it really easy to annotate text or direction, which we can see many using this device for thanks to the ultra-light weight on offer.
Microsoft Office Home and Student edition is pre-installed on the Tab 3, meaning out of the box it's going to be a useful addition to those looking for a more simple laptop substitute, and if the price isn't too destructive, we can see this turning a few heads in your local computing emporium.
Side Sync can be used here too: this allows you to pop a Galaxy S4 (as well as other Android-based smartphones) next to the unit, connected through wires or wirelessly, and the mouse cursor will be able to use the smartphone as a second screen, giving you the ability to drag and drop files across from one device to another.
As you can see at the event itself, the Galaxy Tab 3 will come with its own natty cover, that works via magnets to provide a stand AND A KEYBOARD for anyone that doesn't want to preserve the super-thin frame of the Ativ Tab 3, and instead wants to stop it getting smashed in a bag.
As you can see, the material is a plastic, but it has a certain heft to it that's pleasing. As mentioned, it makes your Ativ Tab 3 so much thicker, but given you get protection (and the option to magnetise on a keyboard) we'll accept it.
Official Facebook and flip the apps that come with the new look of Windows store
A flip chart, a popular social magazine for iOS and Android, has a custom-built Tube-style application for Windows 8, according to a company blog post.
"Flipboard is tailored to the new forum allows Windows users to read, create, and share services to almost any topic imaginable," the post read.
Facebook has not yet commented on the official app Windows 8, but it will certainly be a boost for the fledgling operating system and encourage more big names, jump on board.
A little less newsworthy UK readers, in addition to the official NFL Fantasy League on the app store, and is also being primed for a joyous occasion for those whose weeks focus on putting their configurations, and proposes a deal.
During Windows 8.1 update reveals, Microsoft also showed the cleaner, cleaner layout with larger screenshots for each application and, at the same time, information about the popular and trending apps a Bing.
Keeping up to date with Windows 5.0 is also easier thanks to the new Automatic Updates feature, which can, of course, can be turned off in it, in particular, the update does not float your boat.
